Death Notice
Peacefully at Sumac Lodge on Saturday, March 6th, 2010, George Harold “Hal” Ward of Sarnia, went on to the next world at the age of 93.
Beloved husband of Norma Ward.
Much loved father and father- figure to Valerie Fraser, Mike Ward (Lynn Groves), Joanne Ward-Iaccino (Massimo), and Nicolas Chorostecki (Jamie Watson).
Cherished grandfather to Kristen Ward, Shannon Ward, Alison Evans, Helen Betts, Julian Fraser, Tim Fraser, Camilla Fraser Dransfield, Lucy Fraser, and great-grandfather to Gloria Chorostecki (“Rosebud”) and many great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
Dear brother of Jack Ward of Toronto.
Predeceased by his parents George and Blanche (Waddington) Ward, his brother Richard Ward and his best buddy “Sailor Jack” Widner (2010).
Hal was, simply put, the best of men. He was a World War ll Air Force veteran, having volunteered his services to the RAF. Upon his return, he worked for the federal government in Toronto (his home town), and met the love of his life, Norma. They moved to Corunna where they lived the longest, and happiest, years of their married lives. Hal worked for many years at the Ethyl plant, and even after retirement became a local correspondent for the Southam Press. Writing was his forte, and he really enjoyed penning a column for the Wallaceburg News, entitled “In a Manner of Speaking”. Hal’s greatest legacy, however, is his unfailing integrity, honour, and devotion to family. There was no greater father and grandfather, and we all know how incredibly blessed we have been to have had him in our lives.
The family would like to extend a heart-felt thank you to Doctor Borek and his staff for their outstanding care and concern, and to the staff at Sumac Lodge. The home care professionals who came in to our homes and tended Hal were incredibly caring and compassionate. Monika and Cindy from VON became like family, and Hal was so very fond of them both. Nurses Heather and Jane from Bayshore were amazing, and so much appreciated.
Cremation will take place. At Hal’s request, there will be no formal funeral services. Family and friends are welcome to attend an informal gathering to share memories, laughter and stories at the Lochiel Kiwanis Center on Sunday March 14 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Sympathies may be expressed through donation to the Sarnia and District Humane Society, World Wildlife Fund, or the charity of your choice.
