Death Notice

Peacefully at Sumac Lodge, on Wednesday, October 12, 2016, Hans Frigaard Mogensen passed away at the age of 89. Married to Edite (nee Svenne) for 63 years, and father of Sandra and Susan, father-in-law to Robin Ludlow, and grandfather of Siobhan and Kieran Stroobandt (deceased). Predeceased by his parents Hans Peter and Sigrid, by his brother Jørgen Frigaard. Hans was born on May 19, 1927, in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he served in the Danish army for two years, achieving the rank of second-lieutenant, and then served as a Pharmaceutical Apprentice in Copenhagen. Hans emigrated to Canada in 1951, studied chemical engineering at University of Toronto where he received his Bachelor of Applied Science and became a Professional Engineer. In 1957, he moved to Sarnia and worked as a chemical engineer at Imperial Oil (Esso Chemical) for 26 years. In 1964, Hans earned his Advanced Amateur Radio Operator License, holding the callsign, VE3BHG. He had a passion for flying, and earned his Private Pilot’s license in 1970 and his Commercial Pilot’s license in 1977, and successfully completed construction of a homebuilt airplane in 1987 (CG-RIJ). He volunteered at the Sarnia Humane Society for over 25 years, serving on the Board of Directors and in the roles of President, Treasurer, Newsletter Editor, and Engineering Consultant for the shelter extension. He also volunteered at Redeemer Lutheran Church, serving on its Board of Directors from 1976-1979 and on the Building Committee from 1983-1985. Hans believed strongly in the importance of physical fitness and living a naturally healthy lifestyle, was a long-time member of the Sarnia YMCA, and completed three marathon runs in Winnipeg in 1981, 1982, and 1984. He had a great love for animals, especially dogs, including his three Siberian Huskies over the years - Tasha, Kiya, and Sierra. A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 429 Indian Rd N, Sarnia. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to the Sarnia & District Humane Society.

    Kære Edite, Sandra,Susan og Siobhan jeg vil gerne kondulere for tabet af jeres far min onkel.
    Jeg har nogen fantastisk minder om min onkel,han var et dejligt menneske med hang til kage og altid god for et godt grin, hvilket i den grad mindet mig om min farmor.
    Vi har allesammen mistet et dejligt menneske, æret være hans minde.

    Att/ Edite Mogensen og Sandra!
    Jeg tænker meget på jer alle sammen, nu i den svære tid efter at du Edite har mistet din mand, og børnene deres far og morfar og sviger far. Det er altid svært at miste en af vores kære, men jeg håber at i alle må komme videre i jeres liv. Nu har i alle minderne tilbage om Hans. Jeg mindes min fætter Hans, tilbage til de mange ferier på Bornholm, denne vidende og akkurate mand. Selvom at der var en aldersforskel på ti år, så var vi på bølgelængde og kemien passede sammen. Jeg kommer til at savne hans julehilsener Han nåede meget i sit liv. Æret være hans MINDE (Erik)

    I knew Hans from the health food store where I was working.
    He was friends with the other girls and I was blessed to get to know him.
    Hans was an interesting man, he had a wonderful sense of humour.
    He shared many stories about his travels, family and his love of dogs.
    My deepest condolences to the family of Hans Mogensen.
